Wrocław Chamber Orchestra LEOPOLDINUM was formed in 1978.  The ensemble’s name is related to the name of one of the most precious European Baroque monuments: Aula Leopoldina at the Wroclaw University.

music artist and conductor was for many years LEOPOLDINUMs artistic director and creator of its style.  During 1993-95 this position was held by violinist Jan Stanienda.  Everyday work is supervised by its concertmaster for over 20 years - Zbigniew Szufłat.  Since January 2007 LEOPOLDINUM’s artistic leader is well known violinist, conductor and chamber musician from Vienna Ernst Kovacic, performer of many premieres of newly composed music.

LEOPOLDINUM achieved great attention from the listeners and the critics alike both in Poland and abroad appearing in concert halls such as Philharmonie and Schauspielhaus in Berlin, Tivolis Koncertsal in Copenhagen, Teatro Victoria Eugenia in San Sebastian; at festivals: Tivoli in Denmark, ST. Gallen and Brücken Festival in Austria, Flanders Festival in Belgium, Muziekfestival West-Brabant in Holland, Bodensee-Festival and Weilburger Schlosskonzerte in Germany, Echternach Festival in Luxembourg, Du Perigord Noir in France, Estoril in Portugal  and at noted festivals in Poland: Warsaw Autumn, Wratislavia Cantans and Musica Polonica Nova. Through the Warsaw Adam Mickiewicz Institute's coordination LEOPOLDINUM represented Poland during the following festivals: 2001 - Europalia in Belgium,  2004 - Polish Year In France, 2005 - Polish-German Year in Germany and Poland 2006 in Trondheim in Norway.  In October 2007 LEOPOLDINUM represented Poland in europalia.europa festival in Belgium.

Among many recordings Rossini Gala with Ewa Podleś (contralt) and under the direction of Wojciech Michniewski received the Phonograph Academy Award Fryderyk 1999 (DUX 0124).

The orchestra LEOPOLDINUM is part of the Witold Lutosławski Philharmonic in Wrocław.
